Battle of Călugăreni

Overview

The Battle of Călugăreni took place during the history of early modern Romania on 23 August [O.S. 13 August] 1595 between the Wallachian army led by Michael the Brave and the Ottoman army led by Koca Sinan Pasha. It was part of the Long Turkish War, fought between Christian and Ottoman forces at the end of the 16th – beginning of the 17th centuries.

Significance

The Battle of Călugăreni brought the forces of Wallachia under Michael the Brave into direct confrontation with an Ottoman army commanded by Koca Sinan Pasha, representing one of the engagements of the Long War in which a Christian tributary state on the Ottoman frontier took active military resistance against the empire. The disparity in recorded force sizes — Wallachia fielding approximately 15,000 troops against an Ottoman force estimated at 85,000 to 100,000 — placed Michael the Brave among the most outnumbered Christian commanders of the conflict. The engagement formed part of the broader Long War, the sustained struggle between the Habsburg-aligned Christian coalition and the Ottoman Empire that ran from 1593 to 1606 along the Danubian and Carpathian frontiers.
