Battle context
The Battle of Cachirí was a severe defeat for the Army of the North of the United Provinces of New Granada during the Spanish Reconquest. With casualties of approximately 1,200 from a force of 2,080, the republican army lost more than half its effective strength in a single engagement. The battle unfolded as part of General Pablo Morillo's broader campaign to restore Spanish imperial authority over New Granada, and the outcome left the interior of the country exposed to Spanish advance. Commanders Francisco de Paula Santander and José Maria Vergara y Lozano survived the defeat, but the loss effectively ended organized republican resistance in the north. Cachirí stands as one of the most consequential royalist victories of the Reconquista period, clearing the path for the consolidation of Spanish control over the United Provinces.
