The Battle of Brody, fought across the Dubno–Lutsk–Brody triangle between 23 and 30 June 1941, was among the largest armored engagements of the opening phase of Operation Barbarossa and is recorded in Soviet historiography as one of the 'border defensive battles.' Five Soviet mechanized corps, drawn from the 5th and 6th Armies, held substantial numerical and technological superiority in armor yet failed to halt the German advance. Despite inflicting significant losses on German forces, the Red Army formations were outmaneuvered and suffered enormous tank losses. The outcome demonstrated early and decisively that mass and materiel alone could not compensate for failures in logistics, command coherence, and air cover. German air supremacy and a total breakdown in Red Army command and control negated Soviet advantages and secured a Wehrmacht operational victory that accelerated the German penetration into Ukraine in the critical opening weeks of Barbarossa.
