The Battle of Bothaville represented a rare setback for Christiaan de Wet, one of the Orange Free State's most capable commando leaders, at the hands of British Mounted Infantry. De Wet's forces had consistently eluded and frustrated British pursuit throughout the guerrilla phase of the Second Boer War, making any successful engagement against his command operationally significant. With 100 Boer casualties inflicted by a British force of roughly 600 against de Wet's 800, the action demonstrated that British Mounted Infantry could close with and damage mobile commando units that had otherwise proved difficult to bring to battle. Within the broader British effort to suppress Boer resistance after the fall of the main population centers, Bothaville stood as evidence that the mobile warfare approach was capable of producing results against even the most elusive guerrilla commanders.
