Battle context
The Battle of Borodino, fought near the village of Borodino during Napoleon's invasion of Russia, brought together forces numbering in the hundreds of thousands on each side and produced casualties on a scale that underscored the scale of the campaign. France committed between 103,000 and 135,000 troops under Napoleon Bonaparte, opposed by a Russian Imperial Army of 125,000 to 160,000 under Mikhail Kutuzov. French casualties ran between 30,000 and 42,000; Russian losses reached 40,000 to 53,000, among them senior commanders including Pyotr Bagration. The battle was fought on the approaches to Moscow, making it the decisive engagement for control of the Russian capital in the 1812 campaign. Despite the enormous human cost on both sides, the engagement did not destroy the Russian army, which remained a coherent force capable of continued resistance — a strategic reality that shaped the entire subsequent trajectory of the invasion.
