Battle of Borny-Colombey

Overview

The Battle of Borny–Colombey or the Battle of Colombey-Nouilly took place on 14 August 1870 as part of the Franco-Prussian War. During the battle the escape route of the French army under François Bazaine was blocked when the French encountered the First Army under von Steinmetz. The outcome of the battle itself was indecisive as although the French were able to escape to Metz, they were delayed for 12 hours.

Significance

At Borny-Colombey on 14 August 1870, the French Army of the Rhine under Bazaine attempted to withdraw westward but was intercepted by Steinmetz's First Army. Although the engagement itself was tactically indecisive — Bazaine's force succeeded in reaching Metz — the 12-hour delay proved strategically consequential. That delay gave Prussian forces time to reposition and set conditions for the encirclement battles that followed. The French army's retreat was disrupted at a critical juncture, and its subsequent confinement at Metz would become one of the defining strategic developments of the Franco-Prussian War, removing a substantial French force from the wider campaign.
