Battle of Boquerón

Overview

The Battle of Boquerón was fought September 9–29, 1932, between the Bolivian and Paraguayan armies in and around the stronghold of Boquerón. It was the first major battle of the Chaco War. The outpost (fortín) of Boquerón, among others, had been occupied by Bolivian troops since late July 1932 following instructions of president Daniel Salamanca, which led to the escalation of what began as a border conflict into a full-scale war. The Bolivian garrison was under the command of Colonel Manuel Marzana.

Significance

The Battle of Boquerón, fought September 9–29, 1932, was the first major engagement of the Chaco War. The Bolivian occupation of the fortín of Boquerón and neighboring outposts in late July 1932, on orders from President Daniel Salamanca, transformed what had been a border dispute into a full-scale war between Bolivia and Paraguay. The battle thus marked the point at which the Chaco conflict escalated beyond a localized confrontation into a sustained military campaign. Bolivia committed a garrison of approximately 3,500 troops under Colonel Manuel Marzana, while Paraguay deployed a substantially larger force of roughly 7,500 under José F. Estigarribia. Bolivian casualties of approximately 2,200 against Paraguayan losses of around 1,500 indicated a costly outcome for the Bolivian defenders at this opening engagement.
