Battle context
The Battle of Bladensburg, fought on August 24, 1814, during the Chesapeake campaign, ended in the rout of a combined U.S. Regular Army and state militia force by British regulars and Royal Marines — a defeat so comprehensive it earned the nickname 'the Bladensburg Races.' The American collapse opened Washington, D.C. to British occupation; the capital was subsequently captured and burned, the only instance in the city's history that it has fallen to a foreign invader. The engagement has been characterized as 'the greatest disgrace ever dealt to American arms,' and its consequences extended beyond military loss: the burning of the capital carried profound political and symbolic weight at a critical stage of the war, exposing the federal government's inability to defend its own seat of power. Despite the U.S. force outnumbering the British by a substantial margin, the outcome underscored the disparity in training and cohesion between British regulars and the largely militia-composed American defense.
