Battle of Bezzecca

Battle context

The Battle of Bezzecca was fought on 21 July 1866 as part of the Third Italian War of Independence, which ran concurrently with the Austro-Prussian War. Italian volunteers of the Corpo Truppe Volontarie, commanded by Giuseppe Garibaldi, defeated Austrian forces under Franz Kuhn von Kuhnenfeld during an Italian invasion of Trentino. With both sides fielding roughly 12,000 troops, the engagement produced a clear Italian volunteer victory against regular Austrian forces, demonstrating that the irregular Garibaldini could hold their own in conventional fighting. The battle stands as one of the few Italian successes in the 1866 campaign, a conflict otherwise marked by Italian defeats at Custoza and Lissa. Italy ultimately gained Venetia through the war's diplomatic settlement rather than battlefield dominance, making Bezzecca an isolated operational success within a broader struggle whose outcome was decided largely by Prussian arms elsewhere.
