Battle context
The Battle of Berlin was among the last major offensives of the European theatre of World War II. Soviet forces under Zhukov, Rokossovsky, and Konev committed over 2.3 million troops against a German garrison of roughly 766,750 defenders. The scale of losses on both sides—Soviet casualties exceeding 361,000 and German casualties approaching 925,000—reflects the intensity of the operation. As the concluding strategic offensive on the Eastern Front, the battle effectively ended organized German resistance in the European theatre and brought the conflict in Europe to its close. The Soviet designation, Berlin Strategic Offensive Operation, underscores its place as a deliberate, operationally planned culmination of the four-year Eastern Front campaign that had begun in 1941.
