Battle context

The Battle of Benavente was a cavalry engagement during the Corunna Campaign in which British forces under Lord Paget defeated French Chasseurs à cheval, capturing their commanding officer, General Lefebvre-Desnouettes. Though the broader British army was in retreat toward the coast and eventual evacuation by sea, this clash produced a clear local success against elite French cavalry. It stands as the first major military incident of that retreat, marking the opening of a grueling campaign that would define British operations on the Iberian Peninsula in late 1808. The capture of a French general and the routing of a prestigious cavalry unit provided a measure of morale and tactical credibility to an army otherwise conducting a fighting withdrawal under severe pressure.
