The Battle of Bembezi was an engagement of the First Matabele War between the British South Africa Company, under Patrick William Forbes, and the Ndebele kingdom of Mthwakazi, led by Lobengula. The Mthwakazi force numbered approximately 10,000 combatants, of whom around 2,500 were killed — a casualty rate that points to a severe and decisive defeat for the Ndebele. Within the broader context of the First Matabele War, an engagement of this scale and lethality would have substantially degraded Mthwakazi's capacity to resist the Company's advance and contributed to the collapse of organized Ndebele military resistance in the 1893–1894 campaign.
