Battle context

The Battle of Belaćevac Mine was a week-long engagement between Yugoslav Army and Serbian police forces on one side and the Kosovo Liberation Army on the other, centered on the Belaćevac coal mine. The mine's strategic importance derived from its role supplying coal to two generating stations that together provided electricity to most of Kosovo. Control of the facility therefore carried consequences beyond the immediate military positions, linking the outcome of the fighting directly to the functioning of civilian infrastructure across the territory. The battle reflects the broader pattern of the 1998 phase of the Kosovo War, in which the KLA sought to extend territorial control and pressure Serbian authority while Yugoslav and MUP forces worked to retain key assets.
