The Battle of Bardia was the first engagement of Operation Compass, the opening British military operation of the Western Desert campaign, and carried particular institutional weight for Australia: it was the first battle in the Second World War in which an Australian Army formation fought, the first commanded by an Australian general, and the first planned by an Australian staff. The 6th Australian Division's assault on the heavily garrisoned Italian fortress at Bardia demonstrated that the Italian defensive perimeter in Libya could be breached and held, reinforcing the momentum of Operation Compass and contributing to the broader Allied effort to roll back Italian forces in North Africa. The capture of approximately 8,000 prisoners at a cost of 1,703 Italian casualties underscored the offensive's effectiveness against a numerically superior garrison and set conditions for further Allied advances along the Libyan coast.
