Battle context

The Battle of Valmaseda occurred during Blake's retreat from advancing French forces in northern Spain in November 1808. Reinforced by veteran infantry from La Romana's Division of the North, Blake reversed his withdrawal and struck Marshal Victor's vanguard under Villatte — a rare offensive action by Spanish forces during a period dominated by French advances in the Peninsular War. The engagement inflicted losses of 200–300 on the French vanguard and demonstrated that Spanish regular forces, when reinforced and given favorable circumstances, could turn on pursuing columns and inflict meaningful costs. Within the broader campaign in northern Spain, the action represented a moment of Spanish initiative amid a largely retreating posture.
