The Battle of Ballinalee took place during the Irish War of Independence on 4 November 1920. Members of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), led by Seán Mac Eoin, drove a mixed group of Crown forces consisting of Black and Tans and Auxiliary Division personnel from the village of Ballinalee in County Longford.

Significance

The Battle of Ballinalee was an engagement during the Irish War of Independence in which IRA forces under Seán Mac Eoin successfully expelled a combined force of Black and Tans and Auxiliary Division personnel from the village of Ballinalee in County Longford. The ability of a local IRA commander to drive Crown forces—including the Auxiliaries, who were regarded as an elite counter-insurgency unit—out of a village demonstrated that republican guerrillas could contest and hold ground against the British security apparatus in provincial Ireland. The engagement contributed to Mac Eoin's reputation as one of the more effective IRA commanders of the conflict.
