Battle of Bajaur

Battle context

Operation Sherdil, launched in August 2008, targeted Bajaur as a strategic priority because the region had functioned as a Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan administrative zone and, critically, as al-Qaeda's central command and control hub for operations into northeastern Afghanistan and Kunar province. By directly challenging TTP's political and operational hold on Bajaur, Pakistani forces sought to sever a cross-border support structure that extended the insurgency beyond Pakistan's own territory. The operation involved a substantial Pakistani commitment of between 9,000 and 15,000 troops against an estimated 4,000 TTP fighters, with reported TTP casualties of 1,500. The campaign also generated significant civilian displacement, with reports of approximately 7,000 people newly displaced in the Nurgal district during the fighting, underscoring the humanitarian cost of military operations in contested tribal areas.
