The Battle of Baidoa marked a direct conventional clash between the Transitional Federal Government, backed by Ethiopian forces, and the Islamic Courts Union at a moment when the ICU was advancing on a key TFG stronghold. Baidoa held particular strategic weight as the seat of the transitional government, making its defense central to TFG survival. The engagement, which inflicted substantial casualties on the ICU, formed part of the broader Ethiopian military intervention that reversed ICU territorial gains across southern Somalia in late 2006 and early 2007.
