Battle context
The Battle of Bagradas River, also known as the Battle of Tunis, ended Rome's attempt to carry the First Punic War into Carthaginian home territory. Roman forces had exploited naval superiority established the previous year to land on the Cape Bon Peninsula and conduct a successful campaign in North Africa. When the fleet withdrew to Sicily, Regulus was left with approximately 15,500 men to hold the African lodgement through winter. The engagement proved catastrophic for the Roman expeditionary force: of roughly 15,500 troops engaged, 13,500 became casualties, effectively destroying the force Regulus commanded. The defeat extinguished Rome's most direct attempt to strike at Carthage's homeland during the First Punic War and demonstrated that naval superiority alone could not translate into a sustainable land campaign on African soil. Command of the Carthaginian force was held by Xanthippus, while Regulus led the Roman side.
