The Battle of Azcapotzalco, fought on August 19, 1821, near Mexico City, stands as one of the final military engagements of the Mexican War of Independence. Trigarante Army forces under colonels Anastasio Bustamante and Luis Quintanar faced a Spanish force commanded by Manuel de la Concha at a substantial numerical disadvantage of roughly 16,000 to 3,000 in favor of the insurgents. Coming just days before the conclusion of the war, the engagement reflected the collapsing capacity of Spanish imperial forces to resist the Trigarante campaign that had swept through New Spain since the Plan of Iguala earlier that year. Its proximity to Mexico City underscored how far royalist control had contracted by late August 1821.
