Battle of Ayta ash-Shab

Battle context

The Battle of Ayta ash-Sha'b illustrated the operational difficulties the Israel Defense Forces encountered against Hezbollah's Islamic Resistance in southern Lebanon during the 2006 Lebanon War. Despite deploying five brigades against a Hezbollah force estimated at little more than half a company, the IDF failed to capture the town after roughly two weeks of ground fighting preceded by two and a half weeks of intense air and artillery bombardment. The IDF's inability to secure the town while sustaining relatively heavy casualties against a numerically far inferior force became a marker of the wider campaign's difficulties, in which conventional military advantages did not translate into decisive territorial control against an entrenched sub-state armed force.
