Battle context

The Battle of Atbara, fought on the banks of the River Atbara, resulted in a decisive defeat of Mahdist forces by the Anglo-Egyptian coalition under Herbert Kitchener. The engagement eliminated a Mahdist army of roughly 15,000 fighters and marked the turning point in Britain and Egypt's reconquest of Sudan. By breaking Mahdist resistance at the Atbara, Kitchener's force removed a significant obstacle on the axis of advance toward the Mahdist heartland, clearing the way for the campaign's concluding operations. The battle effectively shifted the strategic balance of the Mahdist War in favor of the Anglo-Egyptian coalition, from which the Mahdist State would not recover.
