Overview

The Battle of Asseiceira, fought on 16 May, 1834, was the last and decisive engagement of the Portuguese Civil War, or "War of the Two Brothers", between Dom Pedro, ex-Emperor of Brazil and the usurper Dom Miguel. Dom Miguel's rebel forces were defeated.

Significance

The Battle of Asseiceira on 16 May 1834 was the final and decisive engagement of the Portuguese Liberal Wars, the conflict known as the War of the Two Brothers between Dom Pedro, former Emperor of Brazil, and Dom Miguel. The Miguelite forces under the Viscount of Montalegre suffered approximately 2,900 casualties from a force of around 5,500, a loss severe enough to end organized resistance. The battle concluded Dom Miguel's claim to the Portuguese throne and terminated a civil war that had divided Portugal since 1828, resolving the contest between liberal constitutionalism and absolutist rule in favor of the liberal faction led by Dom Pedro.
