Battle context

The Battle of Asiago opened with an Austro-Hungarian offensive on 15 May 1916 in the Vicentine Alps on the Italian Front, striking after the Fifth Battle of the Isonzo in what Italian commanders treated as an unexpected attack. The offensive achieved initial success, threatening to break through Italian positions on the Asiago plateau. Italy mounted a counter-offensive that recovered much of the lost ground, including Asiago itself, preventing a strategic rupture of the front. The engagement produced substantial losses on both sides — over 15,000 Italian casualties and more than 10,000 Austro-Hungarian — without delivering a decisive shift in the front line. The battle illustrated the vulnerability of the Italian position to flank pressure from the Alps while the main Italian effort remained concentrated on the Isonzo axis.
