The Battle of Asal Uttar was one of the largest tank battles of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, fought over three days in the Punjab village of Asal Uttar in Tarn Taran district. The engagement was triggered by a Pakistani armored and infantry thrust into Indian territory that captured the town of Khem Karan, approximately 5 km from the border. Indian forces under Harbaksh Singh and Brig. Thomas K. Theogaraj succeeded in repulsing the Pakistani advance after bitter fighting, denying Pakistan the breakthrough it had sought in the Punjab sector. The outcome blunted the Pakistani offensive momentum in this axis of the 1965 war.
