Battle context

The Battle of Arroyo Grande on 6 December 1842 was a major engagement of the Uruguayan Civil War, pitting Manuel Oribe's Blanco force of approximately 12,000 against Fructuoso Rivera's Colorado force of approximately 7,500. The Colorados suffered around 2,000 casualties, a loss proportionally severe given their numerical disadvantage entering the engagement. The battle reflected the broader contest between the Blanco and Colorado factions that defined the 1839–1851 conflict, with Oribe's larger force pressing Rivera's Colorados in what the historical record marks as a significant action within that war.
