Battle context

At Arroyo dos Molinos on 28 October 1811, a British-led allied force under General Rowland Hill trapped and defeated a French force under General Jean-Baptiste Girard, inflicting roughly 1,300 casualties on a French army of approximately 3,000 men. The action effectively destroyed an entire French infantry division and a cavalry brigade as viable fighting formations, removing those units from the order of battle in the Peninsular theater. The defeat carried immediate command consequences: Napoleon dismissed Girard following the engagement. In a war characterized by attritional raiding and the steady erosion of French strength in Iberia, the elimination of two formed units in a single action represented a meaningful operational loss for French forces, reducing their capacity to control the region and support larger campaign objectives.
