Battle context
The Battle of Arras, fought on 23 August 1654 during the Franco-Spanish War, brought together several of the conflict's principal commanders on opposing sides. France fielded Turenne, Henri de La Ferté-Senneterre, and Charles de Monchy d'Hocquincourt against a Spanish force of comparable size commanded by Archduke Leopold Wilhelm and the Grand Condé, who had defected to Spain in 1652 following the Fronde. French casualties were recorded at approximately 1,000 against Spanish losses of around 2,000, suggesting an engagement costly to both sides. The presence of Condé in Spanish service at Arras was emblematic of the way the Fronde had fractured French military leadership, turning former colleagues into adversaries across the front lines of a war that would not conclude until the Peace of the Pyrenees in 1659.
