Battle context

The Battle of Arpachai on the Akhurian River in Armenia saw a Russian force of 7,000 under Count Ivan Gudovich repel an Ottoman offensive of more than 20,000 under Yusuf Pasha, inflicting around 1,000 Ottoman casualties. The engagement demonstrated Russian capacity to hold the Caucasian front against a numerically superior Ottoman force during the Eighth Russo-Turkish War, sustaining Russian strategic presence in Armenia at a point when the wider conflict demanded attention on multiple fronts.
