Battle context
The Battle of Arkansas Post was a subordinate action within the broader Union effort to capture Vicksburg during the winter of 1862–63. Following the failed assault at Chickasaw Bayou and the collapse of Grant's overland approach along the Mississippi Central Railroad, McClernand's forces—numbering roughly 30,000 troops supported by Porter's naval flotilla—turned against Fort Hindman and the Confederate garrison of approximately 5,000 under Churchill. The disparity in force size translated directly into the outcome: Confederate casualties of 4,791 against Union losses of 1,092 reflect the scale of pressure applied. The engagement took place within the contested command structure of the Vicksburg campaign, where Grant and Halleck had maneuvered to limit McClernand's independent authority. Arkansas Post represented one of the few Union offensive successes in the theater during that difficult winter, but it remained a secondary operation while the central question—control of Vicksburg and the Mississippi River—remained unresolved.
