Battle context

The Battle of Arica, fought on June 7, 1880, was a Chilean assault on Peruvian positions at Cape Arica during the War of the Pacific. Chilean forces under Pedro Lagos, numbering 5,479, engaged a Peruvian garrison of 1,628 under Francisco Bolognesi, resulting in approximately 1,000 Peruvian casualties. The capture of Arica removed a significant Peruvian coastal stronghold and continued Chile's campaign of territorial consolidation along the Pacific coast, which had been a defining feature of the war's progression since 1879. The fall of Arica, combined with Chile's broader operational momentum, further diminished Peru's capacity to contest the war's outcome and brought Chile closer to dominance over the disputed littoral territories at the heart of the conflict.
