Battle of Arachova

Battle context

The Battle of Arachova lasted from 18 to 24 November 1826 and resulted in the destruction of a 2,000-strong Ottoman force under Mustafa Bey, with approximately 1,700 casualties inflicted. Greek rebel commander Georgios Karaiskakis used prior intelligence of Ottoman movements to initiate the engagement, blockading the Ottoman troops in the village of Arachova in central Greece. A relief column of 800 men that arrived three days into the siege failed to break the blockade, compounding the Ottoman defeat. The scale of Ottoman losses relative to the force committed made Arachova one of the more costly Ottoman reverses of the Greek War of Independence, and it reinforced Karaiskakis's operational standing as a commander capable of encircling and destroying regular forces in the central Greek theater.
