The Battle of Aouzou comprised two engagements fought in and around the town of Aouzou in August 1987, during the Toyota War, the final phase of the Chadian–Libyan conflict. The first engagement produced a Chadian victory, while the second—a Libyan counteroffensive—is recorded as a Libyan success. Together the two battles illustrated the contested and fluid nature of the Aouzou Strip, the territory at the center of the broader Chadian–Libyan dispute. Libyan forces committed approximately 3,000 troops and sustained roughly 1,225 casualties across the fighting, figures that reflect the intensity of the struggle for the area even as the war as a whole was turning against Libya. The inconclusive overall result—one victory apiece—left the strip's status unresolved on the battlefield, a question that would ultimately require international arbitration rather than military decision.
