Battle context

The Battle of Annual, fought on 22 July 1921 in northeastern Morocco, resulted in a catastrophic Spanish defeat at the hands of Abd el-Krim's Riffian forces. Spanish casualties reached over 13,000 against a Riffian force roughly one-sixth the size of the Spanish army engaged, a disproportion that made the defeat all the more damaging to Spanish prestige. The engagement is referred to in Spain as the Disaster of Annual and is widely regarded as the worst defeat suffered by the modern Spanish Army. Its consequences extended well beyond the battlefield: the defeat triggered a succession of government collapses, contributed directly to the establishment of a military dictatorship under Miguel Primo de Rivera, and ultimately led to the abdication of King Alfonso XIII. Spain's entire colonial enterprise in the Rif was placed in jeopardy, forcing a fundamental reassessment of its policy toward the region. Annual thus stands as a decisive turning point not only in the Rif War but in the broader trajectory of early twentieth-century Spanish political history.
