Battle context
The battle at Anéfis in May 2013 took place within the broader Mali War context, reflecting the fractured nature of armed factions operating in the Azawad region. The attacking force, the Arab Movement of Azawad's pro-government faction, temporarily seized the town from the MNLA before withdrawing. Although the town changed hands only briefly, the engagement illustrated the tensions between competing armed groups — specifically between Kunta Arabs and Lemhar Arabs — that ran alongside the primary conflict between Malian state forces, French intervention, and Tuareg and Islamist armed movements.
