Significance

Ammunition Hill was a fortified Jordanian military post in the northern part of Jordanian-ruled East Jerusalem, positioned on the western slope of Mount Scopus. The battle fought there was among the fiercest engagements of the Six-Day War, reflecting the intensity of the urban and positional combat that characterized Israeli operations in East Jerusalem during the June 1967 campaign. Israeli forces under commanders including Mordechai Gur, Shlomo Yossi Yafe, and Uzi Narkis sustained casualties of between 100 and 150 from a force estimated between 140 and 300 troops, indicating the high cost of reducing the fortified position. The site has since been designated a national memorial in Israel, marking the battle's enduring place in Israeli collective memory of the war.
