Overview
The Battle of Amarah took place from October 19 to October 20, 2006, between the Mahdi Army and police, who were largely members of the Badr Organization. Fighting began on October 19, when 800 masked members of the Mahdi army stormed three police stations in Amarah.

Significance
The Battle of Amarah placed into sharp relief the factional competition between the Mahdi Army and the Badr Organization that characterized the Iraqi Civil War of 2006–2008. The direct confrontation between these two Shia factions over control of police infrastructure in Amarah illustrated how the conflict extended beyond Sunni-Shia sectarian lines into intra-Shia power struggles.
