Battle context

The Battle of Almonacid was fought on 11 August 1809 as a direct consequence of the wider strategic situation following Talavera. King Joseph had withdrawn Sébastiani's IV Corps from that engagement to protect Madrid, and the mission at Almonacid was to check the Spanish Army of La Mancha under Venegas. The French victory secured the approaches to Madrid and neutralized the threat posed by Venegas's force, preventing it from exploiting the pressure already placed on French positions elsewhere in the campaign. Spanish casualties of 3,300–3,500 against French losses of approximately 2,400 reflect a defeat that degraded the Army of La Mancha's operational capacity at a moment when coordinated Spanish pressure might otherwise have complicated French control of central Spain.
