Battle of Allenstein

Overview

The Battle of Allenstein, also known as the Battle of Jonkowo and the Battle of Bergfriede, was a military engagement during the early stages of the 1807 Fourth Coalition Napoleonic campaign. While the battle resulted in a French field victory and allowed for a successful pursuit of the Russian army, it failed to produce the decisive engagement that Napoleon was seeking.

Significance

The Battle of Allenstein, fought during the opening phase of the 1807 campaign, produced a French field victory and enabled pursuit of the Russian army under Bennigsen. Despite this tactical success, the engagement fell short of Napoleon's operational objective: a decisive engagement that could cripple Russian forces and compel a conclusion to the War of the Fourth Coalition. The battle is thus notable less for what it achieved than for what it did not — French forces under Murat and Soult secured the field but could not translate that advantage into the annihilating blow Napoleon required to end the campaign in the east.
