Battle context

The Battle of Aldenhoven, fought on the Roer River, resulted in a French Republican victory that forced a Habsburg withdrawal from the Roer line. By conceding the west bank of the Rhine, the Austrian retreat handed France control of a strategically critical waterway and extended French operational reach into the Rhineland. The French right wing's seizure of a key crossing at Düren after heavy fighting was the pivotal action that unhinged the Habsburg defensive position.
