The Battle of Aldenhoven delivered a sharp early defeat to Republican France in the opening phase of the War of the First Coalition. Facing a Habsburg Austrian force of 39,000 under Prince Josias of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, the French army of roughly 9,000 was routed and suffered approximately 2,300 casualties. The outcome demonstrated the disparity in force strength along the Rhine frontier and reinforced Austrian operational momentum in the Low Countries campaign during the spring of 1793.
