Battle of Alcántara

Battle context

The Battle of Alcántara on 14 May 1809 was a crossing action on the Tagus river near the Spanish-Portuguese border during the Peninsular War. A French division under Marshal Claude Perrin Victor seized the Alcántara Bridge, forcing the defending Anglo-Portuguese force — the Loyal Lusitanian Legion and Portuguese militia under Colonel William Mayne — to retreat after roughly three hours of fighting. Control of the bridge gave French forces a viable crossing point over the Tagus in the western theater, facilitating operational movement toward Portugal at a period when Allied forces were working to consolidate the defense of the frontier. The disparity in strength, with approximately 9,500 French against 2,000 defenders, left Mayne's force unable to hold the position, and the French sustained around 269 casualties in securing it.
