Battle context

The Battle of Alapan on May 28, 1898, marked the first military victory of the reconstituted Philippine Revolutionary Army following Emilio Aguinaldo's return from exile in Hong Kong. Coming in the immediate aftermath of the American naval victory at Manila Bay, the battle demonstrated that the revolution could be revived as an effective ground force against Spanish garrisons. Aguinaldo's forces, numbering 18,000, engaged a Spanish garrison of 3,070 at Alapan, Imus, Cavite, inflicting approximately 2,800 casualties over a five-hour engagement. The outcome validated the renewed revolutionary campaign and established momentum for Filipino forces operating in Cavite at a moment when Spanish imperial authority in the archipelago was already under severe pressure from the American naval presence.
