Battle of al-Qadisiyyah

Overview

The Battle of al-Qadisiyyah took place between the armies of the Rashidun Caliphate and the Sasanian Empire in November 636. It resulted in a decisive victory for the Rashidun army and is considered to be one of the most significant engagements of the Muslim conquest of Persia, and thereby of the early Muslim conquests as a whole. After losing al-Qadisiyyah, the Sasanian army was left unable to defend against the Rashidun siege of Ctesiphon, thus being forced to retreat from all of Mesopotamia. This development enabled further Rashidun offensives into the Persian mainland and culminated in the Sasanian Empire's annexation by 651.

Significance

The Battle of al-Qadisiyyah in November 636 was a decisive Rashidun victory over the Sasanian Empire and stands as one of the most consequential engagements of the Muslim conquest of Persia. The Rashidun army of roughly 30,000 defeated a Sasanian force estimated at between 50,000 and 100,000, a disparity that underscores the scale of the Sasanian collapse that followed. The defeat left the Sasanian army unable to mount an effective defense against the subsequent Rashidun siege of Ctesiphon, the imperial capital, and forced a Sasanian withdrawal from all of Mesopotamia. That loss of Mesopotamia opened the Persian mainland to further Rashidun offensives, a process that culminated in the full annexation of the Sasanian Empire by 651. Al-Qadisiyyah thus served as the operational hinge of the entire conquest: a single engagement whose outcome unraveled Sasanian capacity to hold both its western provinces and, ultimately, the empire itself.
