Battle context

The Second Battle of Mukalla in April 2016 was a coalition offensive aimed at dismantling the al-Qaeda Emirate in Yemen by retaking Mukalla, which AQAP had established as its capital. The Saudi-led coalition, composed of Yemeni, UAE, and Saudi forces totaling around 2,000 personnel, defeated an AQAP force of approximately 1,000 fighters, inflicting over 1,100 casualties on the militant group. The coalition's capture of Mukalla and the surrounding coastal areas dealt a significant blow to AQAP's territorial ambitions in Yemen, effectively collapsing the administrative and logistical center the group had built into a functioning emirate.
