Battle of Đakovo

The Battle of Gorjani or Battle of Đakovo was fought on 9 October 1537 at Gorjani, a place in Slavonia, between the towns of Đakovo and Valpovo, as part of the Little War in Hungary as well as the Hundred Years' Croatian–Ottoman War.

Significance

The Battle of Đakovo, fought at Gorjani in Slavonia between the towns of Đakovo and Valpovo, was part of both the Little War in Hungary and the Hundred Years' Croatian–Ottoman War, placing it within the broader Habsburg–Ottoman contest for control of the middle Danube region following the Ottoman seizure of much of Hungary after 1526. The scale of Habsburg losses — 20,000 casualties from a force of 24,000 — against an Ottoman force roughly a third the size represents one of the most severe Habsburg reverses of the period. A defeat of this magnitude, under the command of Johann Katzianer and Pavle Bakić, would have substantially degraded Habsburg capacity for offensive operations in Slavonia and reinforced Ottoman dominance in the contested frontier zone between the remaining Habsburg-held territories and Ottoman-controlled Hungary.
