The Battle of Ain Zara centered on control of the oasis of Ain Zara near Tripoli, where Ottoman forces under Neşat Bey had established a fortified base. Italian forces under Guglielmo Pecori Giraldi, numbering approximately 12,000 against an Ottoman force of around 8,000, engaged to dislodge this position during the broader Italian campaign to consolidate control over the Libyan littoral. The contest for the oasis reflected the wider dynamic of the Italo-Turkish War, in which Italy sought to reduce Ottoman strongpoints around Tripoli while Ottoman and allied irregular forces used interior positions to contest Italian advances. Italian casualties of 171 against approximately 100 Ottoman losses indicate the cost of pressing against a prepared defensive position. The outcome at Ain Zara was part of Italy's incremental effort to extend its perimeter and neutralize Ottoman-held bases that threatened its hold on Tripoli.
