The Battle of Ain Ben Tili demonstrated the Polisario Front's capacity to strike targets inside Mauritanian territory, pressing the war beyond the borders of Western Sahara itself. The attack, which inflicted 150 casualties on Mauritanian forces under Soueidatt Ould Weddad, was significant enough to prompt a Mauritanian withdrawal from the town five days after the engagement. That withdrawal signaled the difficulty Mauritania faced in holding northern border positions against sustained Polisario pressure, foreshadowing the broader strain the war would place on Mauritanian military and political resolve throughout the late 1970s.
