Significance

The Battle of Ahmed Khel was fought on the road between Kandahar and Kabul in central Afghanistan, placing it on a strategically critical axis of the Second Anglo-Afghan War. A British Empire force of approximately 7,200 troops under Donald Stewart engaged an Afghan force estimated at between 12,000 and 15,000. Afghan casualties of 2,000 to 3,000 indicate the engagement was decided in favor of the British Empire column, allowing continued movement along the Kandahar–Kabul corridor. Control of this route was central to British operational reach in the war, and the outcome helped sustain British access between the two principal cities of Afghanistan during the closing phase of the conflict.
