Battle context
The Battle of Afabet, fought over three days in March 1988, stands as one of the most consequential engagements of the Eritrean War of Independence. Commentators described it as the largest battle in Africa since the Second Battle of El Alamein, a scale reflected in the force sizes committed — roughly 15,000–20,000 EPLF fighters against an Ethiopian force of over 15,000 — and in the severe casualties sustained by both sides, with Ethiopian losses estimated at 8,000–9,000. The battle has been assessed as the most significant engagement in terms of military and political consequences since the Ethio-Somali War, placing it alongside the 1989 Battle of Shire as a turning point in the broader conflict between Eritrean independence forces and the Ethiopian state. Its outcome shifted the operational balance in the war in ways that extended well beyond the town of Afabet itself.
